Editing Services
Welcome to Magic, Myths, and Ink Stains Editorial. Though my speciality is fantasy – short stories and novels – I have experience with every genre and all writing is welcome. Fiction, non-fiction, fantasy, sci-fi, romance, mystery, horror, literary, autobiography, memoir, novels and short stories. If you want to enquire about a service please fill out the form at the bottom of the page with the desired editorial service as the subject and details of your project including genre, word count, a brief summary/synopsis, a desired delivery date if you have one and any specific requiremets. I will respond as swiftly as possible with a quote and my current availability.
If you are interested in working with me, I currently consider free samples so you can determine if my editing style is a good fit. Please bear in mind that these sample will usually be up to 3000 words and do not apply to my Manuscript Assessment service. This is recommended for line editing, proofreading and beta reading; as developmental editing looks at big-picture concepts, a small sample may not fully reflect this but they are still available.
Manuscript Assessment – £350 up to 90,000 words, £2 per additional 1k words
This service is ideal if you have completed your manuscript but are not sure what to do next. You will receive a written report that evaluates story elements like plot , pacing, structure, character arcs, themes, and worldbuilding. It will provide a detailed critique that analyses the manuscript’s overall quality and effectiveness, strengths, and weaknesses as well as guidance on next steps.
Developmental Editing – £8 per 1k words
Developmental editing focuses on the big-picture aspects of your work: structure, plot, pacing, character development, world building, overall writing style etc. You will receive a copy of your manuscript with in-line comments and a separate report with more detailed feedback. If there are any particular areas you would like me to focus on then let me know and I can tailor your editorial report to fit your needs.
Line Editing – £8 per 1k words
This service focuses on your writing at sentence level to improve clarity, flow and style. This can include refining word choice, sentence structure and tone whilst also respecting your unique voice as a writer and intentions in your writing. If you have a particular word count this service can help refine your writing and cut your word count down, especially useful if you are considering a certain publication or competition. All edits will be included in the document as suggested edits and it is up to you which you accept or decline; at the end of the day it’s your writing.
Proofreading – £6 per 1k words
Proofreading is usually the last stage of editing and focuses on picking out any remaining typos, spelling errors, grammatical errors and last bits of fine-tuning.
Beta Reading – £6 per 1k words
Beta reading gives you a reader’s perspective rather than an editorial view. This service focuses on reader engagement your big picture elements. I will highlight where my engagement peaked and waned, my response to the characters and how they come across, the ease of reading and your style, and, where appropriate, an insight into your work’s place in the publishing market, any other works yours reminds me of etc. If you have any specific questions or areas of focus then please let me know and I can incorporate these into the reader report.
Video Consultation – £25
This is an additional service you can request with one of the above. This gets you a 30 minute video consultation with myself to go over my feedback and comments. This would be perfect if you have any extra questions or want greater insight face-to-face or of you want a more in-depth discussion alongside the report. This can be requested as part of your original order or sepaartely after you have received your feedback.
Formatting Information
When sending your work, please do so as a word document, double spacing, 12 point font (Times new Roman, Ariel, Calibri etc as long as it is clear) and with page numbers. If submitting a document with multiple sections/chapters, please, if possible, make the titles “headings” under the Word styles as this makes navigating the document much easier. If, for any reason, you cannot do this or do not know how, I can do so in my copy. This will have no editorial impact, it is just for ease of navigation.
Important Information: Payments
I request payment using Paypal invoices and will use the email provided through the contact form. I will provide a quite once an accurate word count has been provided. If you are in a different country you can request the quote and invoice in your preferred currency otherwise it will be sent through in pound sterling (£).
I do request payment up-front before beginning work. This is to cover the time I will be spending on your project and is for my financial security so I ask for your understanding. I offer a partial refund guarantee in the event I am late delivering or am unable to complete a project for any reason which will be communicated to you if necessary. For returning clients I may consider dividing payments, especially for longer projects, but this would be a case of discussion on a case-by-case basis.
